I wish I could tell you I've been strong.
I wish I could say I've worked hard,
and fought the good fight without giving in,
and without giving up.
How can I hope for you to say,
"Well done, good and faithful servant,"
if I have not done well?

I wish I could say I have put you first in everything.
I wish I could tell you that my love for you
is so strong it affects all that I do.
How can I hope to win your Kingdom,
if a row of idols stands before you, and
I'm too afraid and weak to knock them down?

I wish I could tell you that I've made each day
a special day, and a day pleasing to you.
I wish I could say that worrying about tomorrow
hadn't even entered my head.
How can I hope for the storm to pass,
if I'm unwilling to dance in the rain?

You said, "Ask and it shall be given to you.
Knock and the door will be opened to you."

So I'm asking, and knocking on your gates of love.
Asking -- for a thousand things.
But especially hope.

  3. why don't you figure that out for yerself, EV? I didn't write it as a poem -- it didn't become a poem until I put it in that form.
